I know… the fat bears are in Alaska, not Lexington. But c’mon. This is a tradition worth celebrating in every local community.
Fat Bear Week wrapped up Sept. 30, and when the votes were counted the crowd favorite Chunk took the crown! No controversy, just one very well-fed bear with a broken jaw and a whole lot of internet love. The annual competition, run by Katmai National Park, is a lighthearted, family-friendly bracket that celebrates how Alaska’s brown bears bulk up on salmon each summer and fall to survive the long winter months.
Even though the voting is over, Fat Bear Week is still great fodder for curious kids and nature lovers: the photos and video highlights show bears at their most impressive, and the event is a neat springboard into lessons about food chains, animal behavior, and habitat conservation.
For families in Lexington looking to keep the wildlife learning local, pair a viewing party with a nature walk at Raven Run or the Arboretum. Talk about how animals prepare for seasonal changes and then let the kids sketch a “Chunk” of their own.
